‘A paradise of myths and legends ...’
Originally inhabited by the Adreans and later becoming a Spanish salt mining colony, The Exumas has changed many times over the years.
From a hide-out for pirates to a cotton-producing colony, many of the residents can still trace back their roots to the slaves of the late 1700s. |
One owner of a cotton plantation, John Rolle, a wealthy european land owner, eventually freed his slaves and gave them deeds to his land. These slaves adopted his name and to this day 60% of the locals still have the name Rolle.
Another famous resident is Pretty Molly, an elusive Mermaid, who is said to live in Pretty Molly Bay.
Just one of a number of stories that surround the isands. |
